Spring Garden Planning Motivation
Once upon a time, I made a very fancy garden design. Who was this person, and can she come and motivate me to get my act together for 2016? I’m actually impressed by this garden plan and may reuse some aspects of it. The only thing I’ve done this year (and there are 8 – 9 weeks until the last frost date) is rake the weeds on top of my garden soil. I suppose that’s better than doing nothing, and it means I can now go sprinkle some seeds out there, but otherwise I’ve given no thought to the coming season. I promise to get it together soon. Meanwhile, here’s…

Handbuilt Gardenware – Leaf Imprints in Clay
Over the past year or two, I’ve been using vintage lace doilies to make handbuilt pieces. Before this, I used some garden herbs to make spoon rests, but had not used them in a few years and had never used them with an underglaze on white clay. With the garden booming, I’ve tried different foliage to see what turns out well. I mixed up a little Dawn dish detergent with white vinegar in a spray bottle, and sprayed the weeds first thing this morning. By mid-day, the most prevalent weed in my garden was burned up, but the spider grass needed another application. I will stick to pulling the weeds in the garden beds around the plants by hand, but hopefully this will help control the spread of those as well. Before treatment 7 hours after treatment Scorched chamber bitter,…

Frosty Garden
It was a frosty morning in the garden! I guess it is time to start popping the D3 supplements because it is way too chilly to sit outside with my sleeves rolled up. Pictured below are oregano, some type of choi (bok? pak? I dont’ know), and triple curled kale. Last week, the basil, beans, peppers and cherry tomatoes (the last bit of summer still holding on) permanently bit the dust, so now there’s a good bit of open space on the ground. It only took a month, but some spinach sprouts finally took to the soil, and I’m hoping they overwinter. In other news, I’m three weeks into a pottery class…
