The Slaughter of Silence and Sleep

After tears of confusion, much drama, pain, clinging, drooling, gnawing, and the slaughter of silence and sleep, Wookie has pushed two teeth through. There is no picture because there isn’t much to see yet, just two little white lines on his bottom gum line. I suppose I should be mourning the impending loss of his sweet gummy smile, but babies with just their two bottom teeth are quite adorable too. Last week, Wookie and I visited my family in Chattanooga (technically it is Ooltewah, but usually no one has heard of it). The youngest of mom’s two older brothers passed away, and I wanted to keep her company as we…

    Bag it.

This morning as I was getting my son ready for Mom’s Morning Out, I pulled out some fresh pull-ups and he promptly told me, “No, I want to wear these” – these being his Lightning McQueen and Mater underpants. This was a pretty big moment because ever since the baby was born, Scooby has resisted underwear showing a strong preference for the pull-ups, even preferring them over being naked. I thought all little boys preferred to run around naked, but not this kid. So I swung into gear getting his backpack ready now with two extra pairs of underwear, pants, and headed into the kitchen for a plastic bag for…

    In A Year's Time

Today marks the one year anniversary of the loss of my baby in the twelfth week of pregnancy. It blows my mind how just a year ago I was overcome with such grief, and here a year later I can gaze into the face of this beautiful, healthy one week old baby boy. God’s blessings abounded then, and they certainly abound today. I don’t have anything particularly poignant to say other than I feel extremely thankful. Wookie seems aware that he has a big brother to catch up to. He’s gaining weight rapidly, the 0-3 month Gerber onesies are a very snug fit, he’s rolled over from his belly to…

    Risking Rain

On the way to the airport this morning, it started raining. There were just light sprinkles, but all the mamas started calling each other discussing rain plans and whether we’d brave the trip anyhow. Each of us had somehow managed to break what we know is an important rule if you don’t want to inadvertently disappoint your kid – we had told our two-year-olds we were going to watch the airplanes. However, breaking that rule of not telling where you are going ahead of time is so much fun, especially when the kid’s face lights up and they clap their hands and say, “Yeah! Airplanes!” So we went for it…

    Poop Poop?

Whe Scooby and I have a morning of errands to run, there is a small window of opportunity to get out the door that will allow enough time to complete everything without melting down in the middle of what is usually the last stop. If I spend the entire morning getting us ready, he gets upset that there’s no play time. So this morning we played downstairs and ate chocolate chip pancakes before I took a shower and blew out my hair just enough to prevent icicles from forming around my neck in the twenty-eight degree weather. Scooby wore what he had on yesterday and wore to bed last night…

    Changing Seasons

Scooby and I have really enjoyed our local public pool this summer. It took him a week or so to warm up to playing, but this afternoon he was taking a running (think toddling) jump into my arms in the adult pool. He’s really kicking his legs, blowing bubbles and is just a little too brave for my liking. I think if the summer were a couple months longer, I’d have that kid doggy paddling laps, maybe even doing the butterfly and treading water for 30 minutes… with his hands behind his back. The pool closing for me marks the end of a beautiful but difficult growing season. One miscarriage…
