  • Milburnie Dam Demolition Part 1

    November 17, 2017 /

One of the joys of being a work-at-home mom is that when events show up in my news feed, I can drop everything and go on an adventure. This happened with the cathedral dome rising back in March of 2016. I showed up with a small crowd of onlookers and got to witness the placement of a copper dome that would outlive generations to come. Yesterday I saw a post about the demolition of the historic Milburnie Dam on the…

  • Neighborhood Watch

    November 1, 2017 /

There have been many break-ins in our neighborhood over the past few months in broad daylight, and according to the police, it’s a group of kids. Both of my across-the-street neighbors have been targeted, as well as an elderly couple’s house behind ours. I took the neighbor behind us a rotisserie chicken the day she had to go to the bank and change all her accounts. She asked if I still had chickens in my backyard, which cracked us both…

  • Sunday Stroll at Lake Johnson

    October 22, 2017 /

Shortly after we unloaded the car from church, I demanded everyone pack up a snack because we were going on a hike. Joe picked the place, Lake Johnson, which was strategically half way to his favorite pizza place, Michelangelo’s in Apex. Lake Johnson was a spot we discovered in college. We once drove there with my Camry packed to the brim with friends to watch the meteor showers. We also used to take Scoops there when he was a toddler…

  • Stone Mountain State Park

    October 16, 2017 /

Friday we probably set record time packing for a family camping trip. Once you have been on several trips and are resigned to the fact that your car is indeed too small for much more than a few creature comforts, packing for tent camping becomes simple. That morning I ran to Walmart for hot dogs and other camp food, table cloth clips, and I.C.E. whistles (because I’m a sucker like that). Joe came home around 12:20 pm, and by then…

  • Forest Ridge Park

    October 1, 2017 /

It’s not often we get to see the fruits of Joe’s labor, but yesterday the boys got to participate in a ribbon cutting of one of his projects. Two winters ago, he took us out to hike in the snow at the future site of Forest Ridge Park at Falls Lake. Saturday morning, Joe nonchalantly mentioned wanting to go out to the park opening, and he gave us no indication that this was a thing, that they would announce the engineers,…

  • DIY Plastic Bin Worm Farm

    March 24, 2017 /

Today’s project is making a worm bin or worm farm from the old city recycling bin. First I want to point out how lucky we are that our city collects recycling at the curb and provides bins. Raleigh upgraded to larger recycling carts a few years ago, and we hung on to the smaller bin. I’ve use it around the garden to toss in weeds, and the drain holes ensure that it doesn’t get stinky after a rainfall. This morning…
