  • In Bloom: Bi-color Dahlia

    July 17, 2012 /

This dahlia is very slowly opening. I wish I could tell you what kind it is, but I honestly don’t know. It could be one that I got on clearance last year, or it could be some bulbs I picked up in late spring. Either way, I’m happy it has made an appearance! The dahlias in the front yard fall over once the blossoms open. Any tips on that? I don’t want to have to stake them all, and I…

  • Taking care of the bumbles

    June 7, 2012 /

I’ve always been skittish around flying insects with stingers. I blame my parents who potty trained me in the buff on the side porch, during which I was stung on the bumkin by a bee. When approached by a yellow jacket, I will actually take off in flight until I lose him. However, in the garden, there is one stinger I’ve found peace with – bumble bees! Mind you, the carpenter bees are still evil assassins that chase me for…

  • In Bloom: Scaramouche Daylily

    June 6, 2012 /

Woohoo! It’s two Wordless Wednesday posts in a week. I accidentally posted this week’s on Monday and took it back down. Lest you feel cheated, and lest these are no longer blooming next week, here is our latest daylily addition: ‘Scaramouche’.

    April 7, 2012 /

After being gone all week, I was excited to get out into the garden and see what had changed. Here are several snapshots I took with my phone. In order: blackberry blossoms (2), the garden path, knockout rose bush, muscadine vine (2), romaine, tangerine crossvine, and Texas tarragon.

  • Dutch Iris

    February 25, 2012 /

My favorite flowers are Dutch Irises and now Dwarf Irises. I’ve always loved the deeply colored ones, and every year am adding a couple more to the shady front yard. Last spring I tried a mix of yellow, white and purple Dwarf Irises, which grew tall behind my rosemary and lavender. I’ve moved half of them to a sunnier location and just added this one to the mix: Dutch Iris, Miss Saigon. It is suppose to be under two feet…

  • More and more flowers

    February 25, 2012 /

Flowers are quickly taking over my kitchen garden. I suppose that is okay. Many of them are spring blooming and will have died back before the summer growing season gets under way. This has now been planted out front for the summer!
