lessons from our family garden

  • Chickadees!

    April 9, 2012 /

For about a week, I thought a family of blue birds would move into one of our two next boxes, but a sweet pair of chickadees fought hard for the one in the back and quickly built a nest from the straw I’d stuffed behind their box and fresh grass clippings. I’ve been opening the door to watch the progress, but never saw any birds inside – until this weekend when I got hissed at by a mama bird incubating…

  • Birds!

    March 8, 2012 /

These critters have some amazing personality! I was able to leave the door to the deck open and capture some of these from inside my living room. The birds are quite pleased that I’ve started feeding them again.

  • Bluebird Box

    March 1, 2012 /

This morning I spotted a pair of bluebirds checking out the box I hung last spring. Last spring, I hung the box just a little too late in the season and it’s been empty all year. Sadly, after snagging this picture, my boys went screaming through the backyard, and the bluebirds flew off. I’ve enticed the boys back inside with animal crackers and Curious George, just to give the nesters a chance to realize my yard isn’t that terrifying. I’m…

    January 5, 2012 /

I am not a photographer. I have no miracle tips for you. Disclaimers aside, last winter I developed an obsession with taking pictures of the birds on our feeders. It became my urban semi-artistic redneck version of hunting. I didn’t want to kill anything, I just wanted to capture their little, beaky souls. My Nikon P90 has a 24x optical zoom, so I could get a decent shot of the woodpeckers up on the trees about 30 ft from our…

  • Bird Shooting Season is Open!

    December 27, 2011 /

I’m shooting with a camera – of course! Last week the feeders were filled to the brim and it only took about a day and a half for the birds to find us again. The brave little Chickadees were the first to appear and as always will fly up to the feeder even if we are standing within a few feet of it. Because they don’t seem to be as aggressive as the others, they have to be willing to…
