Family Trip Out West Summer 2018

Be forewarned, I spent a week in the Tetons and Yellowstone national parks with my family, and there are several posts about this trip to come! There are over a thousand photos to sort through, so I  will do it one location and adventure at a time, which will help me relive the trip and remember some of the names of the spots we photographed. There is no way I will be able to recall the name over every mud pot or hot spring, but I plan on linking up some of the National Park Service pages so that maps and information are close at hand. We booked our lodging…

    Stone Mountain State Park

Friday we probably set record time packing for a family camping trip. Once you have been on several trips and are resigned to the fact that your car is indeed too small for much more than a few creature comforts, packing for tent camping becomes simple. That morning I ran to Walmart for hot dogs and other camp food, table cloth clips, and I.C.E. whistles (because I’m a sucker like that). Joe came home around 12:20 pm, and by then I had packed the kids clothes and food. I picked the kids up early from school at 1:10 while Joe pulled the gear out of the closet, and we pulled…

    Hatteras Island

We spent our first week of summer break on Hatteras Island. We aren’t very good at sitting around in beach chairs and relaxing, as you can see from the pics of our adventures. We obsessed over catching blue crabs in the canal at our rental house and the Haulover, chased the sunsets, paddled the sound, hiked a few trails, rode the ferry, climbed walls and walked the more remote beaches. It’s good to be home. Lighthouse Rd, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Rd, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Rd, Cape Hatteras Pelican view at the Jolly Roger Pub and Marina Trying to snag the big shells at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Swimming in sweatpants Crab…

    Camping at Cape Lookout

While posting about our camping trip to Blue Bear Mountain Campground, I searched through the blog trying to find documentation of our previous camping trips. I never shared about them! So over the next few days I’ll be posting some pictures and comments from some of our past adventures. First up, Cape Lookout! One theme that seems to run through all our trips is that we do them on the fly. Often our under-preparation gets the best of us. We planned to camp at the beach over Memorial Day Weekend 2015, but we didn’t consider that everyone else was doing the exact same thing. All the campgrounds were booked except…

    Blue Bear Mountain Campground

This past weekend, we ventured to Todd, NC to stay at Blue Bear Mountain Campground. We usually stay at state parks, but when I went online to look for a last minute site, everything was booked. Some friends of ours had recently been to BBMC, so I figured why not call up the number and see if there was anything left. To give you some background on our camping experiences, Joe and I both grew up camping. Joe did more backpacking with Scouts, and I did more car camping with church families. I also love backpacking, but as a family with young kids, we haven’t done any hike-in camping… except…

    Images from Emerald Isle

We spent last week at Emerald Isle with family, and these are some of my favorite images from the trip. The windy air was humid and salty, so I was struggling to keep the lens clean, but the weather was absolutely gorgeous. Huge thanks go out to Joe’s mom for hosting us! Biggest shells: the very end of the island at low tide Best meal out: The Trading Post Loudest noise: the cannon at Fort Macon Most beautiful view: the night stars Unexpected nature moment: a seagull and pelican fishing together multiple days in a row Smartest decision: long sleeve rash guard
