  • Upcoming Show: The Handmade Market

    October 30, 2012 /

In just 11 days from now, I’ll be selling my wares at The Handmade Market in downtown Raleigh. This show is huge – in a really good way. There is a talented and diverse group of vendors, and the charity donation drive is raising money for Urban Ministries of Wake County. If my memory serves me correctly, it was the first event at which I ever sold pottery. I was quite novice, and my pieces would have made excellent paperweights…

My first course in hand building is over now, although I’m still finishing up several pieces over at Pullen Arts Center. I’ve only ever used the wheel, tending to think hand building wouldn’t interest me, but I have to admit that I really enjoy it. Pressing texture into the clay is much easier with a rolling pin, which doesn’t work so well on a round pot. It also is easier on my shoulder, which has chronic pain and is agitated…

  • Store Opening!

    September 9, 2012 /

Over the past couple months, I’ve been tinkering with several online stores and marketplaces. After a year or so on Etsy and not getting any traffic (my fault for not listing and interacting much), I set up a place on Big Cartel only to discover Storenvy a couple days later. Storenvy combines the design capabilities of Big Cartel and the community aspect of Etsy absolutely free. I can list as many products as I like and post up to five…

Fall is coming, which means some shows are as well… or at least the applications to be in these shows! This weekend I plan on doing a glaze firing. Here is the batch up to this point. on the wheel handles waiting to be attached altered and ready to dry holes added when leather hard drying on the freezer bisque fired waxing the base waiting to be glazed

Once I have a curiosity about something, I quickly let it cross over to passion. It happened with art, guitar, writing, pottery, gardening, and now – for the past year or two – photographing birds. I don’t “put a bird on it” as they do in Portlandia, and I’m not a good photographer as I’ve received no training and only have a point and shoot, but I love trying to get up close and capture them with the lens. Last…
