  • JC Raulston Annual Plant Distribution

    October 1, 2022 /

The Annual Plant Distribution is like getting an annual dividend on your stock. If you are a member, once a year you get the greenhouse excess. It’s wonderful. The “grab” is broken up into four rounds. During the first three rounds, each member can grab three plants. A list of plants are pre-published and numbered with at least four of each available. There are also tons of plants not numbered, and some are real stunners. The fourth round is a…

Friends of the Arboretum Annual Plant Distribution

    October 2, 2021 /

I’ve heard rumors of this event for years. Members show up at the JC Raulston Arboretum on a Saturday morning to rush a field of plants to help empty the greenhouses. This April I finally became a member so my husband and I could gain access to the newsletter, member pricing on events, and passes to this event in particular. Last night we drafted our list of desired plants from the 80 plants listed, and this morning we watched the…

  • My wallet was stolen out of my car at a kids’ sporting event, and my bank gave the thieves my new account number

    July 11, 2019 /

How many times have you left your valuables in a locked car, on the floor of the back seat? I don’t usually leave my purse in the car, but we were running late for our kids’ swim meet at a city pool, and I was rushing to grab the chairs and cooler out of the back and failed to grab it. As we were finishing up our Kona Ice at the end of the meet, some coaches walked over to…

At the end of March, the kids had a day off school for a teacher workday. After seeing an Instagram post about a “Bloom Walk” in Duke Gardens, I gave the boys a heads up that we would be making a trip, and I tagged my friend Erika on the post, hoping she would see it and hadn’t already booked her day. Friday morning she messaged me and we made plans to pack snacks and hit the road at about…

  • A Hike in William B Umstead State Park

    January 12, 2019 /

Our Hike, marked in Red Crayon On New Year’s Day the weather was amazing, so we took an impromptu hike with friends in William B. Umstead State Park. We forged our own path and traveled along Sal’s Branch for awhile before cutting down through the woods, across the power lines and down to the rim of Big Lake. We worked our way down to the boat ramp, across the junction between the two lakes, and then back into the woods beside Sycamore…
