Spring Gardening
I’ve been in a major rut when it comes to writing about our latest endeavors, but in my defense, the kids were on spring break this week, and one of the boys had a stomach bug and then strep throat. This was all after I had been sick with fever and chills for three days. Early in the week, I finally fired a load of bisque, so whenever I get back to Pullen to glaze, I should have a fun…

Holy Name Cathedral Dome Rising
I’ve felt wide open this week with the sunshine and warmer weather. My own students are on spring break, so there isn’t as much online activity, and I’ve been busy in the garden trying to encourage little sprouts with just enough moisture to help them sink in their roots. While driving to the Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, something bright and shiny caught my eye. I did a u-turn and made my way over to site of a new cathedral in…

Basil Has Sprouted!
I was slow this year, but I finally started seeds indoors. The off and on spring weather outside has been such a tease, and I’m checking my sprouts daily to see what pops up. So far I’ve started tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, lavender, basil, and zinnias inside. The very first to sprout were … drum roll, please…. Basil, “Italian Genovese” Heirloom – Certified Organic Seeds See those tiny little sprouts? It only took a week. My most used herb each summer…

Morning Garden Walk
It has been awhile since I’ve taken a morning garden walk! There just isn’t that much to see in the winter unless there is a good frost. Yesterday we had threats of tornadoes and 70 degree temperatures, so that warranted a visit to see what had changed. Mint does not give up easily. These are runners I dug up this weekend that seems to still be thriving. I mail ordered this Renee’s Garden garlic, and it is happy to see…

Feeder Visitors – Nuthatches and Finches
It has been awhile since I’ve posted pictures of birds at the feeder. Until January’s ice storm, I’d actually forgotten to put out food. Today, the feeder is especially active as the sky is spitting down freezing rain. June Kitty has made a permanent perch of the windowsill, and her tail flicks back and forth as she watches her would-be prey. We are currently trying to solve a mystery. Joe claims to have seen a bird with an all-purpose beak,…

Spring Garden Planning Motivation
Once upon a time, I made a very fancy garden design. Who was this person, and can she come and motivate me to get my act together for 2016? I’m actually impressed by this garden plan and may reuse some aspects of it. The only thing I’ve done this year (and there are 8 – 9 weeks until the last frost date) is rake the weeds on top of my garden soil. I suppose that’s better than doing nothing, and…
