• Dating my boys

This morning after dropping Scooby off at preschool, Wookie and I drove out to Cary for routine blood work. It’s been over a year since I have vitamin levels and such tested. Wookie was so sweet and just sat quietly on my lap the entire time. Since I’d fasted at least 12 hours, I took us across the street to Whole Foods for breakfast. Once Wookie saw that we were getting food, he kept pointing at the plate and going,…

  • The Y.

A month ago my family joined the YMCA. The Baby wasn’t enjoying Mom’s Morning Out, so I decided to withdraw him so we could use the money on a family membership. I’ve always scoffed at the idea of joining a gym. It’s been since undergrad that I lifted weights and swam regularly, and since then I’ve had the mindset that my daily activity level should be enough to stay healthy and fit. Well it wasn’t. For three weeks now I’ve…

  • Pottery Mid-process

Pictured above are a lidded baker, mini pitcher, the kiln full of bisque, and a pedestal bowl. Sometimes I wish pieces could maintain the rough green ware look and I could skip glazing all together. Now that I’ve fired plenty of bowls, bottles and tapas plates, I’ve shifted focus to more time consuming pots. Creating pieces with lids, handles and pedestals takes a good bit more focus, and there is always a risk that a handle will pop off during…

  • Crunch Time!

There are basically 10 working days left before my BIG SHOW at the Handmade Market. I’ve got the kiln loaded with another round of plates and bowls waiting to be bisque fired, free business cards have been ordered (I hope 100 will hold me for the day), and I’ve set up a Square account so that I’m able to take credit card payments if needed. I don’t have a banner or sign for the table, but I have to limit…

  • Cabbage Moth on Lavender

These cabbage moths are pretty with their butter-yellow wings, but finding their offspring mid-bite of broccoli is pretty darn nasty. They have been very busy in my garden, even in the midst of two frosty nights in a row. The frost bit the sweet potato vines. I planted some leafy whole potatoes sometime around Labor Day, and having never grown sweet potatoes before, I’m not sure when to dig them up. I tried planting some in the spring, but the…

  • The Kiln Master

This is my husband, the Kiln Master. He has a fun new tool and spiffy face shield to clean up after my messes. Last weekend several of my pots ran very badly. Every single one of the eight shelves was affected. We did a quick cost estimate and the metal grinder was much cheaper ($54) than replacing the shelves ($27 – $35 each + shipping). Pottery is not a cheap hobby, but hopefully it will begin to pay for itself.…
