Fledgling Woodpecker
I was outside checking on the chickens when I heard a rustling sound in a shrub on the edge of a neighbor’s yard. When I looked closer, there was a baby bird flopping around in the leaves and low branches. It has the markings of either a Red bellied Woodpecker or a Northern Flicker, though I’m not certain this is what it is. There is a faint rust colored band on the back of the neck, and I didn’t get a good look at its underside. After it flopped out into the open yard with no sight of parents around for awhile, I scooped it up and placed in the neighbor’s monkey grass along a wooded patch. We have a lot of hawks and stray cats in the area, so hopefully this one will make it! As far as the baby was concerned, my camera and I were the predator.

Awww, poor little baby! I hope he makes it, too! Jason and I have a woodpecker nest in the very top of a dead pine. I have only seen the mama come out once and she did not come down very near, so I am not quite sure what kind she is. Also, I guess I am assuming there is a nest there. Maybe not! I really want an awesome new camera to get better photos! xo Lynn

I went back to the hedges where I set it, and there were no signs of foul play… so I hope it's made it up a tree.
